If you’ve been trying to treat anxiety without drugs for any length of time, you’re probably already familiar with some of the more common strategies. Breathing techniques, mental exercises and finding physical outlets for stress are just a few. Granted, these tactics work pretty well, if you want to speed up the process and treat anxiety without drugs, the following 3 natural herbs for anxiety will help.

For those of you, who have a lot of trouble getting to sleep at night. Try Sleepy time tea with Valerian root.
The Valerian root in the tea decreases your anxiety.
It has mild tranquilizing properties. Obviously it’s not the kind of thing you should ingest before operating heavy machinery or driving, but valerian root has been proven to be, gentle solution for night time anxiety.

Passion Flower
Passion Flower acts as a non-drowsy, natural sedative that relieves intermittent nervousness, anxiety and panic attacks. It’s actually the vine of the passion flower that holds the soothing effects.
Rather than knock you out or make you sleepy, passion flower will make you feel emotionally balanced.

St. Johns Wort
Extracts of this popular herb exert an antidepressant effect by inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin, nor epinephrine, and dopamine. Dosage may vary. The one I took had a recommended serving of three grams of powder per day, but you really need to take it for weeks before results are felt. That said, if you just buy the supplement pills at your health store, this herb becomes a convenient way to ward off the blues.

Kava
This is one of the most popular choices for the treatment of anxiety and insomnia. It is a powerful herb from the South Seas. Used as an alternative to Valium, research studies have found it reduces anxiety equivalently. The advantage is that there are no addictive side effects with the Kava.

Bear in mind, Kava will knock you out. It acts as a sedative so don’t take it if you need to stay alert for any duration of time. This is a more powerful alternative if Valerian root isn’t getting rid of your nocturnal anxiety effectively enough.

Another way to treat anxiety without drugs is to face your anxiety.  Always remember that anxiety is a thought, a fearful thought, but none the less it is just a thought.  Having a counsellor, a coach, or being part of a community for anxiety suffers will be of great benefit for you to treat anxiety without drugs.

Leah says (and for once I don't disagree with her — just joking Leah!), “The solution is to treat the anxiety. It can be done.”

Of course it can be done, but will it? I don't think so, not while there are so many millions of dollars in play in creating anxiety about every facet of prostate cancer, from PSA testing/screening to the inappropriate tests and scans ordered, to the lack of clear indications of outcomes, to unneccesary adjuvant treatments (or should I say adjuvant treatments that have no demonstrable value … the list goes on. This anxiety drives men like beaters at a pheasant shoot, right into early treatment.

In the midst of all this gloomy outlook there is the faintest glimmer of light. I have personally experienced the change in attitude to what was called, so inappropriately, watchful waiting and which is now commonly referred to as active surveillance.

Thirteen years ago it was clear that the general view was that only fools and lunatics would consider such a step. The lunacy element has been removed now and men who follow this path, and the doctors who support that decisio,n are merely regarded as foolish. Perhaps as more time goes by and more studies are published, even that appellation might be removed.

5-HTP cant cause those symptoms. At least not to my knowledge. What your witnessing is an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system/ withdrawl. He rapid tapered off of his Lexepro- that will do it. Ive personally been there.

“33 percent of patients initiated ADT at the first or second clinic visit.”

Patient initiated ADT? Ya gotta wonder who's been castrated here (sorry if this is in bad taste). Doctors should not perform treatments just because patients insist on it. I wonder if the scourge that is direct-to-consumer advertising has played a role in this. Patients see a drug on TV and demand that the doctor given it to them.

This is a very important article because the findings can be useful in other PC settings. We know that patients have HT, which is of questionable benefit and very unpleasant, because they're anxious. Also, patients with low-grade PC forgo active surveillance or convert to treatment because they're anxious.

The solution is to treat the anxiety. It can be done. I also think that if more men did not rush into treatment (which is common in other countries), some of the anxiety related to PC would abate. In the US our inclination is to always do something. So it's understandable that no guy wants to be the odd man out who holds off. I think we need a cultural shift. Abolishing payments to docs based on the number of procedures they do would also help.

PS: I'm not sure what the implications of this study are for younger patients.

Anxiety disorder is considered to be one of the worst mental conditions that affect human beings by making them prone to baseless and groundless worries but with the arrival of anti-anxiety medications like xanax in the pharmaceutical market, successful treatment of anxiety related disorders has become an instant possibility. But, instead of straightway moving ahead to use Xanax and other medicines to treat anxiety such as Buspar and Tenormin, you can log in to and get hold of fundamental tidbits on these medicines first.

From my understanding, the same chemical processes are occurring in both species. Therefore, the rat model is good for advancing our understanding of the processes occurring in humans. In regards to the isolation model, the social isolation is the equivalent of psychological, emotional and neglect stress many children experience. The same processes in the brain occur as a result of these types of stress. Hopefully, through better understanding of the processes, scientists will be able to find a safer and more focused way to treat anxiety and depression cause by early-life stress. Thanks for the comment–Adam

  • Dr. Choy:

    Hi AJ,

Many do report that using MJ decreases anxiety, which leads to continued “self-medication” and thus chronic use for relaxation and coping with stress. But anxiety is also caused by MJ use, often when taken in high doses or during withdrawal periods. Long term MJ is associated with increased anxiety disorders, and vice versa.

Since there are other proven (and less harmful) methods to treat anxiety, it may be prudent to consider them instead of using MJ solely to reduce anxiety.

I've included a link to a journal article that reviews the evidence of cannabis and anxiety.

Oh, I love this. And I kind of feel like I could have written it, too, only not as beautifully as you did. I completely, totally and entirely get exactly what you're saying.

    (P. S. I recently started an AD to treat anxiety. I thought about you when I went to talk to my doctor about it, and I still think about you sometimes when I take my pill each night. I hope it doesn't creep you out that you're my reference for this, but that's how deeply what you've written on the subject touches me. And you know what? When that pill actually started to work it was as if I'd experienced an epiphany. Thank you for your part in that.)

Seems your list describes the ENFP personality type. ENFPs and INFPs are by far the most represented types among those considered to have ADHD. As an ENFP who was diagnosed at 37 with inattentive ADHD (always did well in school, though an extremely slow test-taker and paper-writer), my inattentive symptoms are increased by the Serzone I've had to take for 12 years to treat the anxiety that emerged when I left grad school for the more demanding complexities of the real world. Good work on the blog. Any tips for staying focused and following through on writing projects would be most appreciated!
