Nowadays, people are finding that their life has long been flipped upside down as a result of anxiety. They are panicking merely thinking about a possible health risk. Many go through anxiety without reason and tend to end up being thrown straight into the depth of a panic attack all of a sudden.

This can easily lead to widespread behavioral disorders such as night time anxiety and social anxiety disorder. Some will develop agoraphobia and will not be able to leave their own home; other ones will simply shut down in social situations. Soon after handling high anxiety, sufferers will frequently experience sleeping disorders because of there night time anxiety.

Living with anxiety is most certainly not the ideal situation, and you should not surrender to it.

For treating anxiety better, here are a few helpful anxiety management techniques.

Practice Relaxation – Once you have some free time, try to calm yourself, clear your mind and think positive. This way, every time an anxiety attack is about to happen, you will be capable to enter more easily into a tranquil mental state that will assist you overcoming panic attacks and anxiety effectively.

Deep Breathing – Slowly, take deep long breaths through your nose at a steady pace, again and again. Whenever a panic attack arises, this will make you feel more calm.

Talk to Yourself – This is another useful way for coping with anxiety. Talk to yourself consistently, encourage yourself. Say to yourself statements such as these: “There is no need to feel concerned, the attack will completely disappear in no time”, “Yes, it doesn’t feel very good, but I am certain I can handle it” or “I am going to overcome this attack no matter what!”

Find a counselor or personal coach, they can help implement some anxiety management techniques, also find some community sites online and talk with fellow suffers of anxiety and panic attacks.

    Robert:

The difficulty is in making generalizations about atheists. Atheists are like cats—very hard to herd.

What I'm suggesting is that religious cognitive dissonance and religious delusion are just two forms of human dissonance and delusion. Atheists and agnostics are derisive of these two specific forms of human anxiety reduction, but—because atheists are human beings—they are no doubt reducing their own “denial of death” and “denial of their nothingness” via other therapeutic means.

I'll try a specific example that you might agree with: when there is a death of Christian eschatology in the hearts and minds of atheists and agnostics, those energies often move into revolutionary and utopian politics. If there is no Second Coming, nevertheless people then seek to pour themselves into a political project. There is a reason that secular liberals wrote disillusioned essays in the mid-20th century about communism and designating it “the god that failed.” And there is a reason that some contemporary atheists speak of the “coming Singularity” with religious fervor: we can all imagine a better world, and want one. And nobody wants to die. We want the world to cohere, even if God is not there. We want beauty and truth.

But what I'm suggesting is an atheist's atheism: all gods fail. Nothing works or satisfies because all forms of justification are forms of tail chasing. And we live in a nihilistic universe—a universe that is emptiness: a big nothing. And that includes us. We are gobbling things into our emptiness to no ultimate avail. It is Kurtz entering the “Heart of Darkness.”

Nietzsche called himself the first man to really, really face nihilism. I think that most of us cannot, and that's why we engage in cognitive dissonance: we do not live with death and nihilism squarely before our eyes. We pretend—atheist or not—that what we are doing has some meaning beyond us—some legacy to future generations. And we pretend that we are not empty and the world is not empty.

But we are, as Camus insisted, really like Sisyphus, like actors upon whom the curtain shall soon close tight. The great difficulty is to live in the face of the fact that nothing can matter in any ultimate sense within a godless universe—that all of our narratives and anxiety management strategies are doomed to fail.

I'm sorry to be so negative, but I think that this is what is whistled past by a lot of atheists. We see the metaphorical homeless man (nihilism and death) on the street. We know he is there. We cross over to the other side and whistle and smile. We have free souls. We think he touches us not (to echo what Hamlet said to Claudius). But we're not really looking.

Nietzsche looked. It's why I suggested that book for you to think about.

One more example of cognitive dissonance in an atheist: imagine an atheist who believes that there is one world and that it runs on determinate physics and chemistry (or on perfect quantum probabilistic randomness, which amounts to the same thing). Now also imagine that he believes in free will. Free will, of course, is a religious concept. It is a concept that derives from religious dualism. Atheism is a monism—a philosophy of one world that reduces to atoms and void—and if an atheist believes that the universe “goes” on mechanistic laws then that same atheist must think of free will as ultimately an illusion. If the universe is physics and chemistry, and there is no second world, then what is going on at the human free will level is, logically, not primary or determinative of anything that really is happening in the universe. It just appears to be so. Of course, no atheist (or very, very few) face monistic determinism (or quantum statistical randomness) squarely. They expect the courts to continue to apportion blame, and they expect their wives and husbands to choose them freely over other lovers.

Free will for an atheist functions like redemption does for a Christian: it is a comforting thought with no empirical basis. It is nice to believe, and reduces your subjective anxiety, but it is most likely not true.

Religion is the cry of the oppressed creature (said Karl Marx). So are all of our therapeutic forms of atheism (Buddhist meditation, Roman therapeutic Stoicism, the contemporary Singularity movement, UFO cults, happy face post-9-11 science positive New Atheism. Nietzsche is the atheist Hosea standing outside the atheist's city and saying, “Woe unto you: you are the last men worshipping the long shadow cast across the floor by the carcass of God! Your houses are on fire! Look!”

    Understanding Anxiety
Everyone experiences stress sometime throughout their life, and along with stress comes anxiety. Anxiety is a normal response in times of stress. However, when anxiety becomes excessive dread of everyday experiences, then it has become a paralyzing disorder. According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, there are five different major types of anxiety disorders; Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Social Anxiety Disorder. Statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health show that this disease affects about forty million adults age eighteen and older. It is also the most common psychiatric illness that affects both children and adults. With the right treatment and support from friends and family, it is possible to overcome the disorder and live a normal, happy life.
Anxiety disorders impair a person’s life with fear, uncertainty, excessive worry and tension. They can develop from a wide variety of factors which include genetics, life events, brain chemistry, and personality. “These disorders run in families,” Dr. Charney, director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program at the National Institute of Mental Health, explains. So if a parent has an anxiety disorder, the chance of their children having one of these conditions is higher. That may be due to the genes they've inherited, but Dr. Charney points out, “The environment that a child is brought up in may be important, too. Ultimately, it's probably an interaction between genetic predisposition and environment.” If a child is brought up in a broken and unstable home then that child is more likely to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder compared to a child that is brought up in a stable and nurturing home.
Along with fear and uncertainty, anxiety has many physical as well as psychological symptoms. A person suffering from anxiety may experience muscle tension, aches, soreness, stomach problems, nausea, and diarrhea. They can also expect jumpiness, unsteadiness, edginess and restlessness. Falling asleep and staying asleep may become an issue. Since anxiety is a constant thing, people may tire more easily than they normally would. Psychological side effects include irritability, feelings of dread, inability to control anxious thoughts, inability to relax, difficulty concentrating, fear of losing control, and fear of being rejected. “People vary greatly in their proneness to experience anxiety. Some experience anxiety symptoms with minimal provocation, whereas others become anxious only under the most stressful circumstances,” Taylor (9). All of these symptoms depend on the intensity of the disorder and the situation.
With the proper treatment, many people can lead normal, fulfilling lives. Treatment depends on the type of anxiety disorder, the symptoms, and the patient’s preference. Medications that are prescribed to treat anxiety disorders include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines, beta blockers, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors. “The medications keep the illness at a stable level while the person receives psychotherapy,” declares the National Institute of Mental Health.
Most commonly, children with these diseases experience fear about situations in the future, perfectionism, excessive self-criticism, fear of making mistakes, and feelings of blame for any disaster that takes place. Noted by the National Mental Health Information Center, treatment for children and adolescents includes cognitive-behavioral treatment, relaxation techniques, family therapy, parent training, and medication. “Although the diagnosis may change over time, children with anxiety disorders tend to retain an anxiety syndrome or mood disorder, often developing new anxiety disorders,” concluded Michelle Craske (42). Children dealing with anxiety need constant reassurance from their peers and guardians about things such as self image.
Anxiety Management includes using techniques such as taking slow, deep breaths, relaxation, positive thinking, and thought control. Relaxation therapies assist with relieving muscle tension, improving a person’s mood, and reducing anxiety. Psychotherapy includes talking with a trained mental health professional to discover what caused the disorder and how to deal with its symptoms. According to James Gardner and Arthur Bell, “the intent of psychotherapy is to help the patient discover the solution for themselves” (200).
Anyone that is suffering from this disorder should take it upon themselves to educate themselves about the disease that is interfering with their ever day lives. Anxiety disorders are a common disease, and with the right treatment it is possible to overcome it but if it is ignored and left untreated then it will just progress and get worse. My objective is to provide my reader with useful information that they will hopefully find to useful knowledge to have. One reason I chose this particular topic is because I have loved ones that have some form of anxiety and I know what it is like to be around that and have to deal with it on a daily basis. It is important to fully understand the disorder in order to relate to those who have it.

i have been on Suboxone for 4 years and it is extremly effective at keeping me off of drugs or even thinking about getting high. Yet, the last year i have experianced elevated levels of anxiety to the point of major heart palpitations, high blood pressure and puls over 120 bpm. I am not sure if this is due to the Suboxone but another woman in my group who is in her early 30's like me had suffered a stroke and the doctors dont know why this happened to her. I am very interested to know if this is a long term side effect. is Suboxone doing something to our heart , rythem of the heart beat and blood pressure? i have yet to find any answers or anyone else experiancing this same situation so for the time being i am not blaming the Suboxone on my symptoms of what may be an illness unrelated to the use of this medication. I did have a full work up on my heart and the doctors found no reason for the raised bp , pulse and rythem other than extreme anxiety. now treating the anxiety is very hard since you can not mix Suboxone and Benzo's or so my doctor doesnt approve of and reading some back ground information on Suboxone no one else would recomend it either. I am at a loss, but if anyone else out there has been on this as long as i have or longer please let me know if you have these symptoms as well.

I agree. In fact I'd argue that anxiety management training and its 'oppo' anger management training lie at the heart of truly effective treatment for almost all mental disorders.

A guy's inner game can never compare to what a beautiful woman represents. She still crushes your inner or social value. The only thing her social value can't beat is your natural game. Nature always beats nurture. Look up Rion Williams stuff. Natural grounding is the way to “pick up chicks.”

I'm not really keeping up with my work…
I had my doc appointment just now and got sertraline and some short-half-life benzos to take care of the anxiety side effects.

You're right though, I don't think I should take them for a couple of weeks (although being a bit of an all-or-nothing person, I want to start taking them right now!) because I have all this work due and I'll be alone for a week on top of that and the anxiety got really scary last time, I don't want to deal with that on my own.
I may just start them now though, because last time they gave me an injection of energy which was nice (well, I was able to stay up for about 48 hours straight after not sleeping at all because of terrible night-time anxiety, and still drive home competently for 4 hours), and that might help with the CW if anything.

Hope you reach a decision about taking or not taking, I know it's really hard especially if you've experienced the side effects before.

Of course every child and every mother is different, but as a rule children need to learn how to self-soothe. As a psychologist treating anxiety disorders, I *do* see teenagers who cannot go to sleep on their own (they may not go into their parents' room but they need TV or something else to go to sleep, avoid going to sleep and stay online until all hours, etc). can't go to sleepovers, and so on. Ironically often the most “needy” kids who get “babied” the most are the ones who are predisposed to anxiety and need to develop confidence (in sleep and everything else). It is not neglect if it is done in a planful, caring way. I'd recommend that she consult with a sleep and anxiety/stress expert, and for those who cannot afford to meet with an expert there are many excellent research-based resources out there such as Sleeping Through The Night by Jodi Mindell. Without medical issues, babies are physically ready to sleep through the night between 2-6 months and the rest of the challenges are habits that can be modified.
